Marking 30 years of creative practice - archiving and reflecting. Up-cycling and using waste materials in the 1980’s
As a student Elizabeth gathered the wood shavings from the woodworking workshop floor & dyed them in the textile department - this was her raw material. Back in the woodwork department she made two-part moulds on the lathe then combined the dyed wood shavings with a powdered synthetic resin and packed the mixture into the moulds which were then put under pressure until the material had cured. The result was a series of 3 dimensional forms which Elizabeth then cut & sanded to reveal the colourful marbled surfaces and combined them with dyed veneers. She also used metal in combination with her shavings material.
The images here show a series of brooches made after graduation in the early 1990's. It was these pieces that helped Elizabeth obtain her Crafts Council setting up grant in 1993.
